Bring Your Dog on Board – Pet-Friendly Sailing at Hamble Point Yacht Charters

At Hamble Point Yacht Charters, we’re delighted to welcome your pet on board so the whole family can enjoy a sailing adventure together. A small additional fee covers extra cleaning, meaning you don’t need to worry about kennel costs or pet care while on your trip.

We understand that your dog is part of the family, and exploring new places and having adventures is something both you and your dog will love. To make your sailing experience safe and enjoyable, here are some tips to prepare for your next trip.

Safety First

Life jackets are essential when sailing with your dog. Even strong swimmers can tire, and a life jacket makes it easier to lift your dog on and off the yacht if needed. Look for life jackets with handles for extra safety. Keep your dog on a lead when moving around marinas and pontoons to prevent accidents.

You can purchase life jackets for dogs in advance. To help your dog get comfortable on board, place a non-slip mat or bathroom mat on deck so they can sit and move safely.

Sun, Shade, and Hydration

England can get surprisingly hot in summer! Protect your dog from the sun with dog-friendly sunscreen, such as Petkin SPF15 or Aniwell Filtabac. Ensure there are plenty of shaded areas on board and provide fresh water in a non-slip bowl or a Buddy Bowl for stability.

Medical Considerations

Dogs can get seasick just like humans. Consult your vet before your trip about anti-sickness remedies for your dog.

Toilet Breaks

While sailing around the Solent, frequent stops for sightseeing can help with toilet breaks. If not, bring a patch of artificial grass and a tray to encourage your dog to go safely on board. These are easy to clean and prevent mess on deck.

Paperwork and Vaccinations

If you plan to sail outside UK waters, make sure your pet has all necessary paperwork and vaccinations. The RYA provides helpful guidance for pets traveling by boat, locally and internationally.

For first-time sailing pets, create a safe, cosy corner in the saloon where they can relax and feel secure. A little extra comfort and attention go a long way.
