1. Do I Need a Licence to Charter a Yacht in the UK?

No formal licence is required to charter a yacht in the UK.

  • Bareboat charters: Proof of sailing competency is required (e.g., RYA Day Skipper or equivalent experience).

  • Skippered charters: Ideal for beginners, as our professional skippers handle navigation, safety, and route planning.

2. What Experience Is Required for a Bareboat Charter in the Solent?

To safely skipper a yacht in the Solent, you should have:

  • RYA Day Skipper qualification or higher, OR

  • Equivalent experience such as logged passages, tidal sailing, or skippering experience

  • At least one competent crew member onboard

4. What Should I Bring on a Yacht Charter?

  • • Non-marking shoes

  • • Warm layers & waterproofs

  • • Food & drink

  • • Bedding (if not hiring ours)

  • • Towels and personal items

  • • A sense of adventure

5. Yacht Boarding and Return Times

  • Boarding: From 17:00 (unless otherwise arranged)

  • Return: By 16:00 on the final day

  • Aim to return 90 minutes before finish for refueling, rubbish disposal, and handover

  • Friday arrivals: Extended handover until 19:00

6. Can I Book a One-Day Yacht Charter?

Yes! We offer day charters for both skippered and bareboat options (experience permitting).

Perfect for:

  • • Birthdays and family days out

  • • Corporate events and team building

  • • First-time sailors

Day charter hours: 09:00 – 17:00

7. Are Children Allowed on a Yacht Charter?

Absolutely! Children are welcome on all charters.

  • • Child lifejackets are available (provide sizes in advance)

  • • Skippers ensure a safe and fun experience for all ages

8. Do You Offer Motorboat Charters?

Yes, our fleet includes both sailing yachts and motorboats.

  • • Motorboats are generally skippered only, depending on experience and insurance requirements

9. What Happens in Poor Weather?

Your safety is our priority. We may:

  • • Adjust your route to safer areas

  • • Use sheltered parts of the Solent

  • • Delay departure if necessary

In extreme weather, we follow our terms to find the safest solution.

10. Is Fuel Included in the Charter Price?

  • • Fuel is not included and charged based on usage

  • • Yachts must be refueled on return to Hamble Point Marina

  • • For skippered charters, we refuel for you and charge for usage

11. Do I Need Charter Insurance?

We strongly recommend that charterers arrange suitable personal travel and cancellation insurance for themselves and their crew.

Optional independent yacht charter insurance, including security deposit and cancellation cover, is available through Topsail Insurance.
