Explore the Best Solent Day Sails
Looking for inspiration for a day sail in the Solent? While some marinas may still have restrictions for short stays, there are plenty of beautiful places to anchor or pick up a mooring buoy for a relaxing lunch stop. Always check with marinas before heading ashore, but remember – you can still enjoy incredible sailing and anchoring options across the Solent.
Below we’ve highlighted some of the best short-haul, there-and-back-in-a-day sailing trips from Hamble Point.
Osborne Bay - A Classic Solent Anchorage
Just 6NM from Hamble Point, Osborne Bay lies towards the northeast tip of the Isle of Wight. This is a cross-tide passage that can be sailed at any state of tide. Although often busy, there’s usually plenty of space to anchor and enjoy the stunning views.
Netley Chapel- A Relaxing Afternoon Stop
For a calm, convenient option, consider anchoring in front of Netley Chapel within Southampton Water. It may not be the quietest anchorage due to passing traffic, but after a day sailing in the Solent it’s the perfect place to stop for afternoon tea before returning to Hamble.

Portsmouth Habour - Ideal for Tidal Planning
Around 12NM away, Portsmouth Harbour offers mooring buoys for visiting yachts. To make the most of the tides, aim for a day when high water is around lunchtime, so you can sail in with the flood tide and enjoy the ebb tide back.
Stokes Bay - Stunning Solent Views
Just 8NM from Hamble, Stokes Bay is a fantastic anchorage if the wind has some north in it. Many sailors say it offers one of the very best views in the Solent. Follow similar tidal planning to a trip into Portsmouth Harbour.
Newtown Creek - Wildlife and Adventure
At 10NM distance, Newtown Creek is one of the Solent’s most popular day sailing destinations. With mooring buoys and space to anchor, it’s perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, and wildlife spotting—look out for seals! If the creek is full, you can also anchor just outside. For the best sailing, plan for Portsmouth high water between 0700–1000 to use the ebb tide out and flood tide back.
Thorness Bay - Quiet and Convenient
Located about 8NM from Hamble Point, Thorness Bay offers a usually empty anchorage with good holding. Situated opposite the entrance to the Beaulieu River, it’s a peaceful spot—just be mindful of the strong tides.
